In a matter of hours, at 10:00 am Pacific time (1:00 pm Eastern), Apple is scheduled to hold their second fall media event at the California Theatre in San Jose, California. Last week, on October 16th, Apple sent invitations to certain members of the press with the following tagline printed on the rather colorful invite: ” We’ve got a little more to show you”.
Based on the majority of rumors surrounding the event, it’s likely that they’ll unveil the rumored iPad Mini, introduce a new 13-inch Retina display MacBook Pro and announce updates to their iMac and Mac mini products. According to a new report that suggests Apple is testing two new versions of iOS 6, it’s likely they’ll use tomorrow’s event to announce iOS 6.0.1, which is said to address various bugs and improve both Wi-Fi and cellular performance.
Unfortunately, while the staff at Jailbreaking iOS 6 cannot personally cover Apple’s press conference, the members of BestTechInfo have a live blog scheduled to cover the events in real-time. If you’re interested, be sure to check out their iOS 6 and iPad Mini live blog page and return once the event is underway at 10:00 am (the current local time for San Jose, California can be found here). Also, be sure to check JailbreakingiOS6 after the event for coverage on the various topics and keynote presentation.

A new report from BGR states that their “reliable” Apple sources have informed them that testing for iOS 6.0.1 has already begun with select U.S. carriers. While mostly obvious, Apple will apparently address various areas of concern and numerous bugs with the release of 6.0.1. Mostly though, the new firmware will correct the issue of horizontal lines appearing when an app folder is open or the virtual keyboard is up and a bug that causes the camera’s LED flash to malfunction at times.
Additionally, the new 6.0.1 version of iOS is said to improve WiFi connectivity, correct a cellular data issue, disallow the access of certain Passbook pass details on the lock screen, add an iTunes Match toggle for cellular data and patch an issued that causes Exchange meetings to be sporadically canceled for the entire calendar group.
Also, in the same report, BRG notes that Apple has initiated the testing phase for iOS 6.1. Because testing has just begun, it’s extremely unlikely that the new 6.1 iOS version will be introduced alongside the upcoming iPad Mini, unless Apple releases a separate firmware stickily for the new iPad. Regardless of Apple’s initial rollout plans for iOS 6.1, it’s expected that the all current iOS-based devices will receive the update in the coming weeks or months.
Jailbreak 6.1 and UnTethered Jailbreak 6.0.1 – What to expect
Currently, the only jailbreak available for iOS 6, 6.0 is in the form of a Tethered RedSn0w utility. Moreover, the jailbreaking tool offers limited support for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and the 4th Generation iPod touch. Unfortunately, once the iPad Mini and iOS 6.0.1 are released to the public, the same will be true. Both the iPhone Dev Team and the Chronic Dev Team will need to run various tests and discover numerous exploits before they can compile and release an UnTethered iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak utility.
Furthermore, when an iOS 6 UnTethered jailbreak utility is released depends almost entirely on Apple’s 6.0.1 and 6.1 release schedule. The developers might decide it’s best to wait for iOS 6.1 before releasing a new jailbreak for the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS, iPad Mini, iPad 3, 2 and the iPod touch 5th and 4th Generation.
However, thanks to the iPhone Dev Team’s recent work on Cydia compatibility for iOS 6, upon Apple’s release of both iOS 6.0.1 and 6.1, an updated version of Redsn0w with support for the new firmwares should pushed out within 24 hours.

With less than two days left until Apple’s second fall iOS 6, iPad Mini and Mac media event, a new report was posted by 9to5Mac that claims to have insider information related to the pricing for the highly-anticipated iPad Mini. According to the report, the entry-level WiFi model iPad Mini is said to cost approximately $329 USD. Additionally, two higher-capcity models are also rumored to be announced, coming in at $429 and $529.
The three cellular-ready iPad Mini models will be available in the same capacities as their Wi-Fi counterparts and are expected to sell for roughly $130 more than the WiFi-only models, which places them at $459, $559 and $659.
iPad Mini UnTethered Jailbreak iOS 6
iPad Mini mockup image
Since it’s safe to assume that the majority of our readers who purchase the smaller iPad will be interested in jailbreaking it, we decided to explain the situation. As of now, the latest jailbreak available for iOS 6 is in the form of a Tethered Redsn0w utility (the differences between Tethered, Semi UnTethered/Semi Tethered and UnTethered are outlined here). Also, the 6.0 Redsnow jailbreak only includes support for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and the iPod touch 4th generation. Furthermore, it’s likely that with the release of the iPad Mini, Apple will push out a new firmware to correct bugs and or offer minor features – in which case, Apple will likely release either iOS 6.0.1 or 6.1.
While it’s public knowledge that certain members and contributors to the Dev Teams have successfully discovered usable exploits for newer devices, like the iPhone 5, pod2g reminded jailbreakers earlier this month that an UnTethered iOS 6.0 jailbreak utility is far from complete.
Somewhat related, the iPad Mini is speculated to be manufactured with cheaper iPad 2 components, which means an A5 processor will likely power the new iOS-based device. As most of you are aware, both the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S featured A5 processors and the Dev Teams have successfully jailbroken both devices on earlier firmwares.
Does this mean the iPad Mini and the iPod touch 5th Generation, which also runs on Apple’s A5 chip, will be easier to jailbreak than an iOS device with a completely different processor such as the iPhone 5? Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to tell until the device is released and Dev Teams have an adequate amount of time to run tests, as Apple could have changed the processor on a such rudimentary level that separate exploits are required.
Of course, for now, anything related to hardware and the jailbreak complexity of the iPad Mini is based on conjecture. With that said, don’t forget to subscribe to our official JailbreakingiOS6 and Jailbreak iPad Mini iOS 6 UnTethered news feed, follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook to be promptly notified on any information pertaining to the upcoming iPad Mini and the status of the UnTethered jailbreak for Apple’s 6.0 firmware.
While not exactly our forte at JailbreakingiOS6, we figured some of our jailbreak and Apple enthusiast readers would find coverage on the rumored 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro interesting. Earlier this week, a poster from the WeiPhone forum created a thread dedicated to the smaller Retina MacBook Pro. More recently, the poster updated their forum thread with additional images that highlight the ports, battery design and other various internal components.
Although the photos are mostly small and are of fairly poor quality, it’s apparent that the poster has managed to obtain some version of the unreleased 13-inch Retina display MacBook Pro ahead of the device’s unveiling. Also, a few photos comparing the new Retina model against the standard 13-inch MacBook Pro were added to the initial post.
Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro and iPad Mini iOS 6 (6.0) event
The port layout appears to be identical to that of the bigger 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro model, which was released nearly 6 months ago in June. As revealed in the below image, the left of the alleged 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro features MagSafe 2, USB 3.0 and two Thunderbolt ports, whereas the right side offers an SD card slot, another USB 3.0 port and a new HDMI port.
Additionally, the poster also included images of the logic board, an 8GB RAM configuration from Elpida, numerous internal components and a screenshot of the display options inside Windows 7 with a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600.
Moreover, while offering a nearly identical layout as the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro, there’s no confusing this laptop with its bigger counterpart. To conserve on space, Apple appears to have repositioned the speakers, as they’re not near the edge of the MacBook Pro. Furthermore, it appears that the MagSafe 2 port is colored blue, while the official reason for this is unknown, it’s likely that this is a pre-release version of the forthcoming 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro.
The new laptop will likely be unveiled next Tuesday, October 23rd, at Apple’s second fall media event. Of course, Apple is also expected to announce the highly-rumored iPad Mini, which will undoubtedly run some form of iOS 6 (possibly 6.0.1 or 6.1), during next week’s press conference. Earlier today, an iOS security expert and hacker by the name of planetbeing sent a tweet to his followers with some interesting news related to the status of the iOS 6 UnTethered jailbreak. Planetbeing, who has collaborated with both the iPhone and Chronic Dev Teams in the past on various tools, announced that he’s successfully added a kernel exploit to the iOS 6 Failbreak.
6.0 and iOS 6 Failbreak information :
As mentioned in a previous article on Jailbreaking iOS 6, the term failbreak is used to describe a jailbreak method that relies on an Apple developer account.
Also, if the Dev Team decided to release a “failbreak”, it would spur legal issues and Apple would undoubtedly exact revenge on the jailbreakers.
Jailbreak iPhone 5 iOS 6 and 6.0 UnTethered
In planetbeing’s tweet, he states that the kernel exploit enables tweaks and third-party jailbreak packages to function properly on the iPhone 5 running iOS 6. Additionally, planetbeing also mentions that they’ve almost completed “a full tethered JB (jailbreak)”. However, because it’s essentially a Failbreak, their iOS 6 jailbreak method requires an Apple developer account.
Unfortunately, the current limera1n tethered exploit was patched with the release of newer iOS-based hardware and only functions on the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th generation and the iPhone 3GS. It’s because of this that the jailbreak will take longer to complete, as the Dev Teams will need to utilize numerous UnTethered exploits for the new iDevices.
With that said, to be promptly notified on all updates related to the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 3 and iOS 6.0 UnTethered jailbreak, Follow us on Twitter, Like us on Facebook and subscribe to our JailbreakingiOS6 and Jailbreak iOS 6 UnTethered news feed.
Earlier today, Comex (an iOS hacker and security genius who is often referred to a the “wunderkind” of jailbreaking) announced that, as of last week, he has officially left Apple. The iOS guru abandoned the jailbreaking scene last year for for an incredible internship with Apple: the very company who once loathed the hacker.
How has Comex helped Jailbreaking?
Nicholas Allegra, better known throughout the jailbreak community as Comex, released his first major public jailbreak utility (dubbed Spirit) for iOS 3.1.2 through 3.2 nearly three years ago. Following the development of Spirit, Comex released a userland jailbreaking tool by the name of Star or JailbreakMe 2.0, which brought a browser-based “slide to jailbreak” solution to iOS-based devices on 3.1.2 through 4.0.1.
Comex’s last major contribution to the world of jailbreaking came when he released Saffron, which is more commonly referred to as JailbreakMe 3.0. While certainly not as visually pleasing as JailbreakMe 2.0, Saffron brought another browser-based UnTethered jailbreak to iDevices running iOS 4.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2 and 4.3.3.
What does this mean for the future of jailbreaking and will Comex return to his long lost passion of iOS hacking just in time for iOS 6 (possibly JailbreakMe 4.0)? Only time will tell. For now, subscribe to our JailbreakingiOS6 and 6.0 UnTethered Jailbreak new feed, follow us on Twitter and Like us on Facebook to be immediately notified on every update pertaining to Comex, jailbreaking and iOS 6.
As a quick reminder in case some of our readers missed the latest Apple news, we decided to write this brief article. Earlier today, Apple sent invitations to select members of the press for a special October 23rd media event. While Apple didn’t specify what they’ll announce during said event, the following tagline is included in the invitation: “We’ve got a little more to show you”.
Judging by the majority of rumors surrounding a new iPad that’s unofficially dubbed the “iPad Mini”, Apple will likely use this second fall event to unveil a smaller variant of their popular iPad tablet. Although there isn’t much known about such a device, we can guarantee it will run some version of iOS 6. However, it’s unknown whether the iPad Mini will ship with 6.0 preloaded or an updated version of iOS 6 – maybe 6.0.1?
October 23 iPad Mini (iOS 6) Media Event
Moreover, additional reports suggest that Apple will also unveil a new 13-inch Retina display MacBook Pro, an updated Mac Mini and possible update their iMac lineup.
Scheduled to take place next Tuesday, October 23rd, Apple’s upcoming media event will be held in San Jose at the California Theatre and will commence at 10:00am Pacific time (1:00pm Eastern).

At JailbreakingiOS6, we receive a countless number of questions pertaining to the jailbreak status of the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPod touch 5th Gen and the UnTethered iOS 6 jailbreak in general. Unfortunately, the majority of your questions can be answered with one word, the answer is no. As of now, there isn’t an UnTethered jailbreak for 6.0 and the latest version of RedSn0w only supports the iPhone 4, 3GS and the iPod touch 4th Generation.
With that said, in this post, we’re going to discuss the major differences between UnTethered and Tethered jailbreaks and elaborate on the meaning of a Semi UnTethered or a Semi Tethered jailbreak.
UnTethered versus Tethered iOS 6 Jailbreak
Essentially, there’s only one noticeable difference to the everyday iOS-device owner between an UnTethered and a Tethered jailbreak. Without getting too technical, both jailbreak employ different forms of exploits, which result in a very different outcome. A Tethered jailbreak requires the user to rely on Redsn0w’s “Just boot” option in order to reboot their iDevice to its fully functional jailbroken state (we’ll discuss this further when reviewing what a Semi UnTethered jailbreak is). Alternatively, an UnTethered jailbreak doesn’t require a utility at all to reboot – hence the name “UnTethered”.
Also, I wanted to briefly elaborate on why Tethered jailbreaks only extend to specific devices and why UnTethered jailbreaks are so rare. As mentioned above, Tethered jailbreaks only include devices with an A4 processors or earlier, which would be the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and the 4th Generation iPod touch, as Apple has phased out the others. Moreover, newer devices with an A5, A5X or even the iPhone 5 with its A6 processor aren’t supported because Apple patched the limera1n exploit roughly two years ago, which is what Tethered jailbreaks are centered around.
While I could go on for hours explaining and thoroughly outlining the advantages, disadvantages and details of Tethered and UnTethered jailbreaks, I’m going to conclude this segment of the article by saying this: the Dev Teams are cautious. A lot of work goes towards the development of an UnTethered jailbreak utility and a lot of exploits are utilized. Once the UnTethered jailbreak is released, Apple can easily patch said exploits through an updated version of iOS, and so continues the game of cat and mouse.
Jailbreak iOS 6, Semi UnTethered and Semi Tethered
Semi UnTethered and Semi Tethered, what do they mean? Fortunately, we only have to explain what a Semi Tethered jailbreak is, as the two are one and the same. After performing a Tethered jailbreak through RedSnow, jailbreakers often prefer to install a package from Cydia that converts their Tethered jailbreak into a Semi Tethered jailbreak. While still required to reboot using RedSn0w to retain complete functionality, a Semi Tethered jailbreak allows users to reboot their device without the assistance of the utility for limited functionality. Essentially, the Semi Tethered package acts as a lifeline if you aren’t near a computer and your iPhone or iPod touch dies and you have to reboot. Please be sure to visit the post from BigBoss on the topic if you have additional inquiries.
Hopefully this article has answered the majority of your questions – if not, feel free to leave a comment and we’ll attempt to provide additional insight. Today, the famed iPhone Dev Team hackers updated their wildly-popular RedSn0w utility to jailbreak iOS 6 with native Cydia support. While the new 6.0 firmware has been able to be jailbroken for some time through a simple Redsn0w and SSH workaround, this new update brings complete support for Cydia.
Unfortunately, even with the new version of Redsnow, iOS-device users can only jailbreak iOS 6 using what’s commonly referred to as a Tethered jailbreak. Essentially, this means the device will have to be booted with the assistance of the RedSnow jailbreak utility every time it’s turned on.
Jailbreak iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod touch 4th Gen on iOS 6
Also, due to the nature of this Tethered jailbreak, only the following iOS devices are supported:
- iPod touch 4th Generation
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 3GS
If you own of of the following newer iDevices, it’s not compatible with this iOS 6.0 jailbreak:
- iPod touch 5th Gen
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 4S
- 3rd Generation iPad 3
- iPad 2

Today, US customers who pre-ordered the new iPod touch 5th generation on September 14th should have received their order via either FedEx or UPS delivery this afternoon. Alternatively, for those of you who didn’t order online, Apple stores around the country started receiving and officially selling their fifth-generation iPod touch stock yesterday (October 11th).
Surprisingly, even though the new iPod touch 5th gen with iOS 6.0 has only been publicly available for just over a day, a popular iOS jailbreak tutorial creator by the name of iCrackUriDevice has complied an impressive playlist of video coverage on the new iOS-based device, which is embedded below.
iPod touch 5th Generation on iOS 6 coverage
Comprised of an in-depth Unboxing of the new iPod touch, a review of Apple’s new and rather intriguing iPod Touch Loop accessory, a Siri review and a speed test video between the iPod touch 5G, the iPhone 5 and older iOS-devices, the above playlist provides an accurate representation of how amazing the new iPod touch truly is.
Starting at $299, the 32GB 5th Generation iPod touch is the ideal compromise for customers who are looking for a powerful iDevice that’s just a step below the iPhone 5.
Jailbreak iPod Touch 5th Generation iOS 6 and 6.0 info
While there isn’t currently an iOS 6 UnTethered jailbreak available for any iOS-device on 6.0, because the iPod touch 5G is powered by Apple’s A5 processor, it’s possible that the device will be jailbroken much faster than the A6-based iPhone 5. However, that’s not to say that the Dev Teams don’t have their work cut out for them, as Apple usually throws up hardware barriers with the release of new iDevices to prevent against jailbreaking.
As of now, the latest information available to the public regarding the UnTethered iOS 6 jailbreak is from pod2g’s 6.0 presentation at JailbreakCon earlier this month.

Due to the positive response we’ve received regarding our post on the paid App Store apps for 6.0 and iOS 6 that were made free for a limited time, we decided to write a followup on additional free apps.
Today, we’ll cover 6 free apps on Apple’s App Store that were once paid and have since been reduced. Due to the apps being available on a promotion-basis, while they’re free for the time being, depending on when you read this article, the developers of said apps may currently charge a fee for downloading them. But, just like with all digital content available from Apple through either iTunes, iBooks or the App Store, once you’ve downloaded the apps, you can re-download them at a later date across all your iOS 6 devices.
6 Free iOS App Store apps for 6.0
Originally created by JailbreakFirst.com, the following list contains a mixture of paid apps from both today (10/10/12) and yesterday (10/9/12) that are currently available for free on 6.0:

Over the past day, customers who pre-ordered their 5th-generation iPod touch (running iOS 6.0) on September 14th have likely noticed that their order status has gone from “Preparing for Shipment” to “Shipped”. Additionally, said customers have also reported that their credit cards have been charged since Apple’s massive order update.
Customers whose orders have shipped should receive their new iPods via delivery by either UPS or FedEx this Friday or Monday (October 12th – October 15th). Also, according to select posters on WeiPhone (a Chinese Apple and iOS 6 site and forum), certain Japanese and Chinese retail locations have already received their new iPod touch and iPod nano stock.
iPod touch 5th-generation Benchmark scores on 6.0 :
As reported by a Japanese site who has already received their new iPods, Macotakara, the much-improved iPod touch fifth-generation easily outperforms its predecessor. With a Geekbench score of 625, the iPod touch is now comparable to the iPhone 4S, which has a slightly lower score of 623. However, like the iPhone 4S, the new iPod touch is still slower than both the iPad 2 and the new third-generation iPad 3, which respectively score 754 and 761. Also, the A6-based iPhone 5 easily outshines the new iPod touch when talking performance, as it’s benchmarked at an incredibly high score of 1,649.
Unfortunately, it looks as if Apple won’t include the sheer power that their A6 processor provides until they release the 6th-generation iPod touch. For additional details on the new iPod touch, be sure to visit Jailbreak First (a new and reputable jailbreak, iOS and Apple news site).
Jailbreak iOS 6, 6.0 iPod touch 5G information
Unfortunately, similar to the jailbreak status of both iOS 6 and the iPhone 5, the new fifth-generation iPod touch won’t be capable of a jailbreak for some time. As previously stated by pod2g, it will likely take weeks or months for the members of the iOS hacking community to release a 6.0 UnTethered jailbreak utility for the iPod touch 5G and the iPhone 5.
With that said, subscribe to our official Jailbreak 6.0 UnTethered iPod touch 5G and JailbreakingiOS6 news feed to be notified whenever there’s any additional jailbreak-related news.
We receive numerous questions on a daily basis pertaining to the status of the iOS 6.0 UnTethered jailbreak. Unfortunately, as of now, we reported on the latest jailbreak news from pod2g last week – additional information and progress has yet to be announced.
Today, we decided to stray from our normal posts on JailbreakingiOS6 and report on free apps from Apple’s App Store that were once paid. While the apps in the list covered in this article are free for the time being, it’s possible that the developers of said apps may revert them back to being paid apps. However, as with anything from the App Store or iTunes, once you’ve downloaded them, you’ll be able to re-download the apps on any of your iOS-based devices for free – even if they become paid apps in the future.
With that said, let’s continue with the list of now-free applications. Put together by a new site called Jailbreak First, the following list contains apps that are available for free on iOS 6 as of 10/8/12:
Along with JailbreakingiOS6, JailbreakFirst is another awesome and credible site that reports on accurate jailbreak and Apple-related news. This past weekend, a major jailbreak convention dubbed JailbreakCon was held in California at the South San Francisco Conference Center. During the event, pod2g (a well established iOS hacker that was instrumental in the iOS 5.1.1 UnTethered jailbreak) gave a rather interesting lecture regarding jailbreaking and his contributions to the community. First, he opened by reviewing and sharing details pertaining to his jailbreak efforts – everything from his first exploit discovery to his latest work on Absinthe 2.0 and the 5.1.1 Jailbreak.
Jailbreak 6.0, iOS 6: information from pod2g
Once pod2g brought the attendees of the conference up to present time, he went into more detail on the status of the iOS 6 and 6.0 jailbreak for newer devices (including the iPhone 5).
While pod2g explicitly stated that there isn’t a jailbreak utility being developed at the moment for iOS 6, a number of hackers and security experts are preparing to collaborate over the coming weeks. Furthermore, pod2g explained that the all pictures of developers with jailbroken iPhone 5s that have surfaced since the device’s release are running what’s known as a failbreak.
What’s an iOS 6 and 6.0 Failbreak?
Members of the jailbreak community often refer to failbreaks as a jailbreak method that cannot be released because it relies on an Apple developer account and would have severe legal ramifications if made publicly available.
Pod2g also revealed that the biggest inconvenience and setback for him isn’t the complexity of iOS 6, but rather the lack of capable hackers to assist him. According to pod2g himself, it will likely be weeks, or even months, before an iOS 6 UnTethered 6.0 Jailbreak utility is ready to be released. With that said, subscribe to our official Jailbreak 6.0 UnTethered news feed to be immediately notified when the jailbreak is available.
Yesterday morning, a new jailbreak video caught our attention from iCrackUriDevice (a popular iOS and Jailbreak tutorial creator). Previously, we decided against writing a jailbreak guide for the final version of iOS 6. However, since the iPhone Dev Team has yet to update RedSn0w to include native Cydia support, and after seeing iCrackUriDevice’s video, we decided to help our readers as much as we can in this in-depth written guide and explanation.
As mentioned above, Redsn0w has yet to be updated to include Cydia (the graphical user interface for downloading and installing third-party packages). With that said, in this tutorial, we’ll not only go over how to jailbreak 6.0 and iOS 6, but also how to successfully install Cydia vis SSH access. Also, before we begin, keep in mind that this is a Tethered Jailbreak, which is outlined in detail on our jailbreak iOS 6 on iPhone 5 news article.
First, because this isn’t an UnTethered jailbreak, ensure that you have one of the following compatible iOS-devices:
- iPhone 4 – both CDMA and GSM versions
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod touch 4G or fourth-generation
Unfortunately, if you have one of the following newer devices, it IS NOT compatible with this iOS 6 jailbreak:
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 4S
- iPad 2
- iPad 3 – third-generation
If you wish to be notified when and UnTethered jailbreak is available for newer devices, subscribe to our JailbreakingiOS6 UnTethered feed.
Jailbreak 6.0 and Jailbreak iOS 6 firmware iPhone 4,3Gs and iPod touch 4 :
Step 1: Download the latest dev version of the increasingly-popular Redsnow utility from one of the download links towards the end of this tutorial. Once the download is complete, open and run RedSn0w. Also, if you’re a windows 7 or Vista user, right click redsn0w, set compatibility mode for Windows XP (service pack 2) and grant Administrative before running the utility.
Step 2: After the jailbreak program is open, click ‘Extras’, followed by ‘Select IPSW’ and point RedSnow to your iOS 6 IPSW, which can be found in the below download section. Click ‘Ok’ to the prompt saying that the IPSW has been successfully identified and navigate back to the main screen inside of Redsnow.
Step 3: Select the option to jailbreak, once the firmware has processed, ensure that the option to install SSH has been checked by default and continue.
Step 4: At this point, you’ll need to set your iDevice in DFU mode, which is fairly easy to do. Simply hold down both the home and power buttons for a total of ten seconds. Once ten seconds has passed, release the power button and continue holding the home button for an additional ten seconds. If DFU mode was entered successfully, RedSn0w will automatically continue and bypass the instruction screen.
Step 5: Wait for the jailbreak process to fully complete and for your iPhone or iPod touch to reboot. After it does, close the Redsn0w utility and reopen it.
Step 6: With Redsn0w open, click ‘Extras’, ‘Select IPSW’ and browse for the iOS 6 firmware. Redsnow will identify the build and prompt you, like in the second step, simply click ‘Ok’. Select the option to ‘Just boot’ and enter DFU mode again (refer back to the fourth step).
Congratulations, after your device reboots, it will be jailbroken. However, if you wish to install Cydia, you’ll need to continue with this tutorial.
Install Cydia on iOS 6 with a windows PC :
Step 1: Download and open PuTTY. Obtain your Wi-Fi IP Address (here’s a tutorial on how to do just that) and input it in the ‘Host Name field’ inside of PuTTY.
Step 2: Ensure that the connection type is set to ‘SSH’ and continue by clicking ‘Open’. You’ll be required to input the username (root) and password (alpine) when PuTTY prompts you to.
Step 3: Once PuTTY is in the Unix style command prompt interface, copy and paste the following command and press enter:
wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh
Install Cydia on a Jailbroken iOS 6.0 device using a MAC :
Step 1: Open terminal (a default application for OS X). Obtain your Wi-Fi IP Address (here’s a tutorial on how to do just that) and type the following command in terminal: ‘ssh root@(enter your iDevice’s IP Address)’ – here’s an example of what your command may look like:
ssh root@192.160.1.11
Step 2: When terminal prompts you, enter the alpine password and press enter to continue. Copy and paste the following command to install Cydia:
wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh
Whether you used PuTTY or terminal to install Cydia, after your iPhone or iPod touch resprings, you will be successfully jailbroken on iOS 6 with Cydia fully installed. However, take into consideration that the Dev Team hasn’t updated Redsn0w for a reason – there are likely errors and incompatibilities you will face after following this tutorial. If your device has any issues once Cydia is installed and it’s not functioning properly, a simple restore through iTunes will fix it.

With yesterday’s iPhone 5 release, millions of customers happily received or purchased their iPhone 5. I’m not going to lie, while only offering incremental changes to the iPhone, the 5 makes a world of difference over its predecessors. Offering revisions such as a taller, 1136-by-640 display with 40 percent more color saturation and 326 ppi (pixels per inch), a two-tone aluminum and glass back unibody design, the new Lightning connector port, iOS 6 and much more, the iPhone 5 is certainly the best iPhone to date. Furthermore, despite the iPhone 5′s taller form-factor, Apple managed to manufacture the device in such a way as to trim down on thickness by 18 percent and decrease the overall weight by 20 percent.
Jailbreak iPhone 5 on iOS 6 information :
Chances are good though you didn’t come here to be sold on the new iPhone 5 with iOS 6.0. You were probably looking for a jailbreak solution for your new iPhone that seems to be somewhat plain in comparison to your old jailbroken phone. While this isn’t a jailbreak tutorial, seeing as the iPhone 5 has only been available to the public for roughly a day now, we have something just as good. Yesterday, an iOS security expert and hacker by the name of Grant Paul (chpwn) revealed that he has jailbroken the iPhone 5 on iOS 6!
In the above image, it’s apparent that Cydia is present on the iOS 6 homescreen of an iPhone 5 – it’s the rightmost app in the 5th row. With the tweet that accompanied the screenshot, chpwn said the following:
Taller screens like Cydia too.
While obviously referring to the iPhone 5, if that’s not enough proof, chpwn also posted the image below, which is of the Cydia app open on the iPhone 5. In the picture, the following identifying text is displayed: ” iPhone5,1, iOS 6.0, Cydia 1.1.6+2 “.
Despite the certain possibility that the above images could have been faked, chpwn is certainly a reliable source and a major contributor to the jailbreak community. Moreover, chpwns initial tweet was retweeted by MuscleNerd (the most widely known member of the iPhone Dev Team).
Jailbreak 6.0 iPhone 5 UnTethered :
Of course, we have to discuss the likelihood of an UnTethered iOS 6.0 jailbreak for the iPhone 5, as it’s a question we’re asked frequently. To briefly summarize, the major difference between a Tethered and UnTethered jailbreak is that all tethered jailbreaks rely on the assistance of a utility to successfully boot the iOS device once it’s jailbroken. Additionally, due to the nature of the Tethered jailbreak, it will only function properly on A4 devices and earlier, which would include the following: iPhone 4, iPhone 3Gs and the 4th-generation iPod touch 4G.
While the tethered jailbreak seems limited, it does have one major advantage over the UnTethered variety. Because tethered jailbreaks exploit hardware-based vulnerabilities, an updated utility can typically be pushed out closely following the release of a new firmware.
However, it’s safe to assume that the majority of jailbreakers prefer the UnTethered option, as they don’t have to worry about rebooting their device with the assistance of a MAC or windows-based PC. That being said, since there isn’t a known hardware vulnerability for newer devices, chpwn’s jailbroken iPhone 5 on iOS 6 is likely running on an UnTethered jailbreak.
Also, as a side note, even though chpwn has managed to jailbreak his iPhone 5, there’s a strong possibility that we won’t see a public jailbreak released for some time. The developers typically like to save the exploits they’ve discovered, check compatibility for other devices (in this instance, that would include the iPhone 4S, iPad 3, iPad 2, the 5th-generation iPod touch 5G and all A4 devices), ensure that Apple doesn’t release an updated version of iOS and take their sweet time compiling a utility.

Today, after months of waiting, Apple has finally released iOS 6.0 to the Public. The newest firmware adds over 200 features to iOS, including Apple’s new and redesigned Maps app, improvements to Siri (the iOS-exclusive personal assistant), updates to both the Safari and Mail apps, the addition of iCloud tabs, Facebook integration, Apple’s new digital wallet Passbook app, a FaceTime over cellular data update, overall improvements to the user interface and much more. Users can update to the new firmware via Apple’s over-the-air update feature (accessible in the Settings app) or through iTunes.
Jailbreak iOS 6, 6.0 information :
Now that we’ve covered the release of iOS 6, it’s time to move on to our area of expertise: jailbreaking. While currently not available, a new iOS 6 jailbreak will be released by the iPhone Dev Team shortly in the form of an update to RedSn0w. However, unfortunately, the new jailbreak will be similar to the one released for iOS 6.0 GM (Gold Master) in the sense that it will provide a Tethered jailbreak for limited devices.
First, before explaining the differences between Tethered and UnTethered jailbreaks, it’s important to look at supported devices. As mentioned above, the jailbreak for iOS 6 will be Tethered and only the following devices will be compatible with the jailbreak:
- iPhone 4 – both GSM and CDMA models (AT&T, Verizon and Sprint in the US)
- iPhone 3Gs
- fourth-generation iPod touch 4G
Seeing as the 6.0 jailbreak will initially be Tethered, it will be incompatible with newer devices. For a utility such as RedSnow to include support for the newest iDevices, the Dev Team will have to find exploits that function properly and allow for the injection of code. The reason the above iOS-devices are supported is because Geohot (George Hotz) discovered the infamous limera1n hardware exploit and an updated one has yet to be uncovered. Because of this, the following devices won’t be supported in the initial iOS 6.0 jailbreak:
- the all-new iPhone 5
- iPhone 4S
- iPad 3
- the cellular iPad 3 variant
- iPad 2
- iPad 2 GSM version
- iPad 2 CDMA edition
- iPod touch 5G fifth-generation
Also, due to Apple phasing certain devices out, neither the iPod touch 3G (third-generation) nor the original iPad will be supported in the upcoming iOS 6 jailbreak.
Final UnTethered Jailbreak iOS 6.0 support
As briefly mentioned earlier, the jailbreak will initially be Tethered instead of UnTethered. While UnTethered jailbreaking utilities are the preferred choice for users, the Dev Team can easily release an updated Tethered jailbreak thanks to the limera1n exploit.
The key difference between a Tethered and an UnTethered jailbreak is the Tethered jailbreak’s requirement of a computer to successfully boot into the device’s jailbroken state. In order for an UnTethered jailbreak solution to be released, the Dev Team will have to discover new exploits that are compatible with every device in both of the above lists, which may take some time. That being said, if you own any of the iOS devices that will be incompatible with the iOS 6 Tethered jailbreak, it’s recommended to remain on 5.1.1, as it has a currently active UnTethered jailbreak.
As for the release of the upcoming Tethered 6.0 Redsn0w version, as pictured above, Musclenerd tweeted that an update will “be out soon”. At this point, it’s anticipated that the Dev Team will release the new version sometime later today or tomorrow.

Yesterday, Apple held an exclusive iOS 6, iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5G (fifth-generation) unveiling media event and released the iOS 6 Gold Master candidate. Now, less than one day after the event, the iPhone Dev Team updated their popular RedSn0w utility to include support for the new Golden Master seed. However, unfortunately, this new iOS 6 jailbreak will not install Cydia (the main graphical user interface for downloading and installing third-party tweaks and packages) – we’ll elaborate on Cydia’s absence towards the end of this tutorial.
iOS 6.0 Golden Master (GM) Seed
While we’ve explained what the iOS 6 GM firmware means in previous posts here on JailbreakingiOS6, this is an ideal opportunity to review. The GM or Gold Master firmware, often referred to as Golden Master, Gold Masters or GoldMaster, is essentially the final release. All of the iOS 6 features are included in the Gold Master seed and all acknowledged bugs have been addressed. The only real difference is that iOS 6 GM is indented for Apple Developers – however, it’s extraordinarily easy to circumvent Apple’s intentions.
Install iOS 6 GM, Gold Master, without a UDID / Developer Account :
In all beta firmwares, Apple implements measures to ensure that an iOS Device’s UDID or Unique Device Identifier is registered through a developer’s account before in order to successfully restore. However, a simple workaround was discovered in the days of the iOS 5 beta firmwares that still works today.
First, it’s required that the user downloads Apple’s new iOS 6 Gold Master firmware (a simple search should do the trick), as well as the latest public release, which is currently iOS 5.1.1. Next, ensure that a backup is created of the iDevice via iTunes and restore to the latest 5.1.1 firmware. Finally, simply press option (on a MAC or shift for Windows), click Check for Update and point iTunes at the new iOS 6 Gold Masters build.
Jailbreak Apple’s iOS 6 GM firmware iPhone 4, 3Gs and iPod touch :
Although previously stated, only the following devices are compatible with the GM jailbreak:
- iPhone 4 – CDMA and GSM versions
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod touch fourth-generation
Step 1: Download the newest dev version of the ever-poular Redsnow utility from one of the links listed below and run the program. Also, be sure to right click redsn0w, set compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 2 and grant Administrator privileges if you’re on windows 7 or Vista.
Step 2: Once the GM jailbreak utility is open, navigate to Extras, Select IPSW and point Redsn0w at your iOS 6 Gold Masters IPSW. Continue, confirm that the install SSH option is checked and click Next.
Step 3: Click back to the main screen and select the option to jailbreak. Now that we’ve come this far, you’ll need to set your iOS device into DFU mode. This can be accomplished by holding down the home and power buttons together for ten seconds, once complete, let go of the power button and continue holding the home button for an additional ten seconds. If your device’s screen is black and the RedSn0w instruction screen is automatically bypassed, you’ve successfully entered DFU mode.
Step 4: Wait for the entire jailbreak process to conclude and for your device to reboot. Once it has, completely close out of Redsn0w and reopen it. As a note, if you’re on windows XP or Vista, you’ll have to run RedSn0w as an Administrator (there’s no need to set it to compatibility mode this time, as that was already done in the first step).
Step 5: Now that Redsn0w is open again, navigate back to Extras, Select IPSW and browse for the iOS 6 GM seed. After identifying the build, Redsnow will prompt you to proceed. Simply click OK. Select the Just boot option and enter DFU mode for a second time. Again, this can be accomplished by holding the power and home buttons together for ten seconds, letting go of the power button and continuing to hold the home button for an additional ten seconds. Once you’ve completed these five simply steps, your device has been successfully jailbroken.

UnTethered and Cydia support :
Cydia isn’t present in this release due to incompatibilities. It’s as simple as that. Once iOS 6 is released to the public next week on September 19th, the Dev Team will work to release an updated version of RedSn0w with support for Cydia.
Unfortunately, because this is a Tethered jailbreak, it’s required to repeat step 5 every time your device reboots because it isn’t an UnTethered jailbreak. Without getting technical, a Tethered jailbreak differs from an UnTethered jailbreak in the sense that it relies on the assistance of utility to reboot. Also, because of the exploit(s) used to create a Tethered jailbreak, it’s only compatible with older devices. While there will be UnTethered jailbreaks released for versions of iOS 6 in the future, it won’t be any time soon. The Dev Teams will more than likely want to test various exploits and methods on the new iPhone 5 and 5th-generation iPod touch before releasing an UnTethered jailbreak.
Subscribe to our Jailbreak iOS 6 GM and JailbreakingiOS6 feed to be immediately notified once an iOS 6 jailbreak with Cydia is release. The same goes for an UnTethered 6.0 jailbreak – we’ll keep you updated.
Shortly after today’s September iPhone 5 and iOS 6 media event concluded, Apple released the next version of 6.0 for developers. But, before we further discuss the new firmware, as a reminder, don’t forget to check JailbreakingiOS6 frequently. Now that Apple is preparing to release iOS 6 to the public, the members of JailbreakingiOS6 are also readying to provide the best possible iOS 6 jailbreak coverage. We’ll feature countless tutorials, tips and tricks pertaining to 6.0 and jailbreaking in general.
Apple’s iOS 6 GM, 6.0 Gold Master edition
As mentioned above, after today’s event, Apple seeded iOS 6 GM to developers. iDevice owners around the globe will now have the opportunity to experience iOS 6 firsthand. While the official version of iOS 6 won’t be released until next week, iOS 6.0 Gold Master (GM) is currently available. The two version will be practically identical, as the Golden Master seed is essential the final version. It’s just intended for developers. However, users aren’t required to have their device’s UDID (unique device identifier) registered through Apple’s developer program to restore to the new pre-release firmware. Update: the official iOS 6 gold master Jailbreak has been released.
Jailbreak iOS 6 GM – Gold Masters Download information :
Similar to our previous GM guide, we’ll go over what to expect for the 6.0 Gold Master jailbreak in this reference article as well. While the 6.0 Gold Master candidate is already released, the iPhone Dev Team (the security experts and hackers behind both Redsnow and PwnageTool) have yet to release a new version of the RedSn0w jailbreak utility. However, once an update is pushed out by the Dev Team, it will provide a Tethered jailbreak for certain devices. In short, a Tethered jailbreak differs from an UnTethered Jailbreak in the sense that it’s required to re-run a certain part of the utility every time the device has to reboot in order for it to properly function. If Redsn0w’s just boot Tethered option isn’t used prior to the reboot of a jailbroken device, it will simply appear to be bricked, as the screen will remain at the boot logo. The reason the GM jailbreak will be tethered, along with the initial jailbreak utility for the final release of iOS 6 is because numerous exploits are required to create what’s called an UnTethered Jailbreak. Once the exploits of an UnTethered jailbreak are revealed through the release of a tool, they can easily be patched by Apple. Also, the iPhone Dev Team likely wants to accomplish an iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5G (fifth-generation) jailbreak prior to releasing an UnTethered tool.
Moreover, unfortunately, due to the long-outdated limera1n exploit used in tethered jailbreaks, only older (A4 and earlier) devices will be supported. That would include the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, the original iPad 1 and the iPod touch 4G (fourth-generation). As long as those devices are still officially supported through Apple, they’ll always be capable of jailbreaking through a tethered utility.
As for the completely finalized version of iOS 6, as mentioned in the beginning of this guide, Apple announced that current iDevice owners can install the firmware on September 19th. However, iOS 6 won’t be available until the 21st for both the new iPhone 5 and the iPod Touch 5th-generation, as they won’t be released until the later date. With that said, it’s recommended to subscribe to our official JailbreakiOS6 feed to be notified as soon as the iOS 6 GM jailbreak is released.
With Apple’s confirmed September 12th iPhone 5 and iOS 6 media event only days away, the staff here at JailbreakingiOS6 are gearing up in full force. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about iOS 6 and jailbreaking in general. We’ve already provided a countless number of developers with the best tutorial for jailbreaking the 6.0 beta firmwares and, once Apple officially releases the next major version of iOS, we’ll provide the countless number of iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users with the best in-depth written instructions.
iOS 6 GM (Gold Master) edition
Shortly after the September 12th media event, Apple is expected to seed iOS 6 GM. Once they do, users from around the world will have the opportunity to experience iOS 6 for the first time. However, before Apple pushes out the finalized version of iOS 6, they’ll release 6.0 Gold Master (GM). While intended for developers to provide once last round of testing, in the past, non-developers have been able to successfully restore to the near-finished GM build of previous iOS versions. It’s extremely likely that iOS 6 will follow earlier Gold Master releases by allowing the public to upgrade to the firmware. Currently, iOS 6 beta 4, as well as previous beta builds, require the device’s UDID (unique device identifier) to be registered with a developer’s account before restoring.
What’s a UDID?
As previously mentioned, UDID stands for unique device identifier. Every iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch is associated with a UDID, which is simply a random sequence of 40 numbers and letters used to differentiate devices. A device’s UDID is often used by developers when testing their App Store apps and one of the main applications Apple uses it for is to determine whether or not a device is eligible to restore to beta firmwares. However, curiously enough, Apple has never officially addressed why they don’t require an iPad, iPod or iPhone to be registered under a developer’s account when restoring to a GM build.
Jailbreaking iOS 6 GM and Final Release information :
This wouldn’t be JailbreakingiOS6 if we didn’t go over what to expect as far as a 6.0 GM jailbreak goes, would it? Shortly after Apple releases the Gold Master candidate build, it’s expected that the iPhone Dev Team (the geniuses behind Redsn0w and PwnageTool) will release an updated version of the RedSn0w utility to provide a Tethered jailbreak for select devices. But, before we proceed, this is an ideal opportunity to briefly elaborate on the differences between the two types of jailbreaks. First, we have UnTethered, which is the ideal choice for the majority of users. An UnTethered jailbreak requires that you run your iDevice through the jailbreak process once. The jailbreak will remain unless you restore or update to a newer firmware via iTunes, if that’s the case, you’ll need to jailbreak again. The second type is a Tethered Jailbreak. Without getting too technical, this differs from an UnTethered jailbreak because users are required to re-run a certain part of the utility every time the device reboot in order to escaped the dreaded infinite bootloop. Moreover, tethered jailbreaks only function with certain devices, as Apple patches them with the release of updated hardware. Currently, only the iPhone 4, iPhone 3Gs, iPod Touch fourth-generation and the original iPad will be supported in any and all iOS 6 Tethered jailbreaks. However, due to the nature of the Tethered jailbreak, every time Apple pushes out a new firmware, the devices previously mentioned will always be capable of jailbreaking; as long as they’re still supported by Apple.
As for the final release of iOS 6, if Apple follows the same schedule as last year, it will be available to the public the same day the iPhone 5 launches. While there will certainly be limitations to jailbreaking iOS 6 GM, it will still enhance the iOS experience for users with supported devices. That being said, subscribe the official JailbreakiOS6 Gold Master feed to be notified once iOS 6 GM and the jailbreak are released.
